why sound is so important update!

In my AICE Media Studies class today we learned about sound. I have to say it was really interesting. We watched a video just about fifteen minutes long but it explained a lot of things that I never really thought about before. I always thought that sound in movies and shows wasn't too thought out. The video showed us that sound is actually something that people plan very carefully. Every type of sound has a purpose in the movie or show.

We learned about sound. This is the sound that's actually part of the movie world. For example footsteps, doors closing people talking and cars driving by. These are the sounds that you would hear if you were in the scene. I did not realize how important these sounds are until the video pointed it out. If you took them away the scene would feel really weird and empty. It would be like the characters are floating in space. These little sounds help make the scene feel a bit more real.

Then we learned about diegetic sound. This is the opposite of sound. It is the sound that the characters cannot hear like background music or some sound effects. This type of sound controls how the audience feels. If a scene is sad the music is soft and emotional. If something scary is about to happen the music gets tense. It is really cool how much non-diegetic sound affects our emotions without us noticing. The filmmakers are basically guiding our feelings the whole movie or show.

then there is the background noise that fills in the environment. It is not the like focus but it makes the scene feel alive. For example if a scene takes place in a park you might hear birds chirping, wind blowing or people talking in the distance. If it is a city scene you might hear traffic or sirens. Without background sound the scene would feel fake like it was filmed in a silent room. Ambient sound makes a difference even though we do not always pay attention to it but if it wasn't there I'm pretty sure we'd Definitely notice.

Another thing we learned about was Foley sound. This was really surprising to me. Foley artists create sounds in a studio to match what is happening on screen. They might crunch celery to make the sound of bones cracking or shake a piece of metal to make thunder. It sounds kind of silly but its actually really important. Foley sound makes the actions sound more realistic than the audio. I had no idea that many sounds in movies are actually fake but they sound more real than the real thing like I used to think they waited for it to storm and used the audio from there.

We also talked about effects. These are the sounds that make scenes more exciting, like explosions, lasers and whooshes. They help grab the audiences attention and make the moments feel bigger and more intense. Without effects action and fighting scenes would be really boring and unentertaining.

Then there is dialogue. The video made me realize how much work goes into making dialogue sound clear and natural. If the dialogue sounds bad the whole scene falls apart kinda like in my film pink kill because our dialogue sound wasn't the best. That is why filmmakers use microphones depending on the situation to make sure the dialogue comes through more clearly.

By the end of the class I realized how much sound affects the way we experience movies, shows and videos online. Sound is not just background noise it is something that people think about and design on purpose. Before today I never really paid attention to sound. Now I am starting to notice how much it affects everything. I appreciate how much work goes into the smallest moments in media and how sound can completely change the mood or meaning of a scene. I am talking about sound in movies and shows and how sound, in movies and shows is really important especially for my next film.
